As a senior aide to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) during the 1960s, Young helped shape the civil rights movement and its philosophy of nonviolent resistance.

Ambassador Young joins an impressive list of honorees, including: Pinky Cole (CEO, Slutty Vegan/Clark Atlanta University), Charles King (CEO, MACRO/Howard University), Cynthia Bowman (SVP Chief Diversity Officer, Bank of America/Spelman College), Datari Turner (President, Foxxhole Productions), April Ryan (White House Correspondent/Morgan State University) and Henry Goodgame (VP, External and Alumni Relations/Morehouse College).

Founded and executive produced by Sundance film/event producer Jash’d Kambui Belcher (Morehouse c/o ’99), and executive produced by actor Derek “Fonzworth Bentley” Watkins (Morehouse c/o ’96) and CEO of URGE Development Group/chief strategist of URGE Imprint Roderick Hardamon (Morehouse c/o ’98), as well as, actress/dancer Faune Watkins (Spelman c/o ’23), the HBCU Power Awards honors the achievements and accomplishments of HBCU alumni and supporters who are making innovative and vanguard achievements in business, sports, philanthropy, media, music, technology, TV, film, politics, civil service and fashion.

ABOUT THE HBCU POWER AWARDS

The HBCU Power Awards was created to herald the accomplishments of scholars who attended historically black colleges and universities and have succeeded against the odds. This special recognition is bestowed upon a select few who have overcome adversity in society in order to attain unique distinction. The goal of the HBCU Power Awards is to positively impact a creative synergy between HBCU alumni, students and faculty by strengthening and/or creating relationships among them. The Awards aims to inspire youth to bring their talents to an HBCU. It will also open the door to new and innovative fundraising opportunities at Morehouse College.
